This post is meant to gather all of my fanvids together in one place. I finally found adequate storage for all of them, so the links below should be their new permanent locations. As I make new vids, I'll announce them with separate posts, and also add them to this list. I've decided to add Imeem streaming options, since the links are pretty iffy, so I'll add those as I upload them. ^_^

Nearest book meme
1. Grab the nearest book. 2. Open the book to page 123. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions. 5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest
WHIMSEY: So out of the Frying Pan--you know where Brother--
WHIFF: Ay he that's Born to be Hang'd--you know the rest, a Pox of these Proverbs.
WELLMAN: I know ye well--yeo're all rank Cowards, but once more we forgive ye, your Places in the Councel shall be supply'd by these Gentlemen of Sense and Honour. The Governour when he comes shall find the Country in better hands than he expects to find it.
The Widow Ranter, by Aphra Behn
Kind of unlucky I was working on a paper, or the nearest book might've been As Meat Loves Salt - much more exciting. ._.
Also, I need new icons. ...

seriously. what the hell?
you know what else i find interesting? fandom is comprised primarily of women. livejournal defines "hate speech" as the incitement of violence against social groups based on ethnicity, religion, or race. misogyny is not forbidden by the TOS. complaints about misogyny end with the woman's account being deleted. a connection? you decide.
(ideally the "complaints about misogyny" line will have a link to the precise incident as soon as i find it) ... (nope, no it won't. since i can't find the link i shall give the circumstances as i recall: someone posted in their private livejournal a warning to his neighborhood about a rash of robberies. a troll responded with a "sarcastic" remark to the effect that the poster was bigoted. the remark read something like: "just round up all the mexicans and blacks and we'll be safe". i'm taking the troll's word that this was meant facetiously, though his own comments later indicated that the statement was entirely sincere. later commenters objected to the troll's bigoted remarks, pointing out that the inital post made no reference to the ethnicity or race of the robbers, and was simply a statement advising that neighbors lock their windows and doors. the troll responded to women commentors with a veritable rain of misogynistic filth and obscenity. when commentors objected to this, the troll responded with an invitation to come take it up with him personally. a female commentor found the troll's home address on his website and reposted it in a comment. she was promptly deleted from livejournal with no warning or appeal. the troll's comments were not deleted, and he was not censured for inciting violence on the basis of the commentor's gender. the woman is punished for attempting to stand up to the troll. the troll is rewarded for his behavior. the end.)
livejornal has been flouting their promise to warn people long before the latest fandom blowup.
(is posting someone's personal information on the web problematic? potentially. but keep in mind that the troll posted this information on a public website, and subsequently repeated the invitation with address information attached. do asshats deserve less protection under the law? perhaps not, though darwin would disagree.)
EDIT: okay, can't find the specific misogyny link, so here's some homophobia to tide you over: http://bookshop.livejournal.com/834653.html
the two are related - hate crimes dealing with gender AND sexuality are supported by livejournal. their recent obsession with pedophilia obscures the very real, very harmful issues that plague our society. including pedophilia, yes, of course, but certainly not limited to it.
you want some numbers with that outrage? one in six women will be raped in her lifetime. in america.
this obviously does not cover the occurence of rape in third-world countries, where little girls are sold to pimps or married to significantly older men or castrated to prevent her from cheating when the likelihood her husband will pick up aids from a prostitute is holding at around 60%, and certainly not in india, where women aren't "allowed" to say no. or even to demand that their husbands use a condom. see also the high incidence of aids in married, heterosexual women in india.
these figures are based on the number of reported rapes. the estimate including unreported rapes is more like one in four women.
how can you make estimates based on unreported incidents, the smart alecks among you ask? personal experience, both mine and that of the scientists who conducted this study. actually that's partially untrue. based on my personal experience, the numbers should be more like three in four women.
sidenote: our society still blames women for being raped. men are "dogs" and therefore have no responsibility. they just can't control themselves. the woman should have been more careful. she was "asking for it." she was dressed provocatively and made him rape her. he was drunk and so holds no responsibility. she was drunk so it was her own fault. she was a prostitute and didn't have the right to say no. she was married to him and didn't have the right to say no. they were dating, she knew where this was going.
does anyone else see the problem with this line of reasoning? does anyone wonder why so few rapes are reported?
and i hope you noticed my use of parallel structure to imply that marrige is very similar to prostitution in our culture. otherwise all that fancy rhetoric would've been wasted ...
women's activities, thoughts, feelings, emotions, personal lives, interests, hobbies, professions, and bodies are denigrated and de-prioritized by modern western culture (by modern eastern culture as well, but that hasn't been my main area of study for five years. things could've changed). what women want doesn't matter to most of society. and "feminist" is still a dirty word.
you know what a feminist is? i can tell you what she isn't: a professional victim.
fandom is a prime example of a women's culture that is denigrated by mainstream, male society. it fits none of the hallmarks of male culture: it's not oriented towards profit, ownership, mainstream recognition, copyright protection, mainstream values and morals, the heroization of the idea (and the man behind the idea, as though ideas really occur in a vacuum), publication (through a publishing house, most of which are owned and run by men, women occupying lower-echelon jobs and women's novels accepted for publication only when they pertain to "women's issues" like homelife and family. and shopping.)
the author's right to own his work was a concept invented by ben jonson in the early 17th century. one hundred fifty years later, samuel johnson stated that a woman writing was like a dog preaching: interesting, but more freakish than skillful. note also the implication that women are less human than men, a theme running through most of modern culture. (specifically, the immediate go-to insult for women is "bitch", and the equivalent for men is "son of a bitch" - an insult based on the mother; when asked, the worst insult most men can think of is "cunt", a woman's body part excised from her whole and misappropriated by male insult culture).
recent television would ask you to believe that men need to reclaim their manhood. shows like "the man show" and entire networks exist to deny the progress carved out by feminism toward equality. these are shows (and networks) designed to put women "back into their place" as objects of male desire (emphasis on object, nonhuman, nonthinking, lacking agency, there to be used and discarded by and for male pleasure).
how can men need defending? how are men being harmed? how is the male oppressor using the language of victimhood to deny his female victim rights different from the white oppressor doing the same to his black victim? i'll tell you: at least people notice racial oppression.
feminism causes men to lose the right to view women as objects. that is their only loss. the problem? western society depends on the "fact" that women are objects. women are paid less, given less respect, than men. men view women as objects of desire without acknowledging women's rights to view men in turn. (easy translation: ugly men are pared with beautiful women on the majority of major network television sitcoms and we as audience are asked to believe that this is right and normal, that women are supposed to have different standards of judgment than men - emotional rather than physical, which denies male emotionality and female desire at the same time. men are allowed to judge female beauty without being judged in return.)
how is all this related to fandom?
fandom judges men on an emotional AND physical basis (canonically ugly characters tend to be prettied up for fanfic, their physically unattractive qualities either denied, glossed over, or eroticized). such judgment grants far too much power to women in this society.
fandom, as a primarily women's hobby, is deemed less important than male-themed hobbies. for instance, fantasy sports leagues are given all the respect of man's obsession with real sports. who decided sports were important anyway? how is my expression of creativity less important than a man's gambling habit? men who are interestd in the activities endorsed by fandom (rewriting or augmenting canon events) generally describe their hobby in mainstream ways, as, for instance, "alternative history buff", or similar. they're engaged in the same activities (asking "what would happen if ...?), but do so in a male-coded sphere: history - specifically mainstream history and its preoccupation with male concerns - war and politics. this perspective of course ignores the majority of women's lives, and relegates their concerns to the sidelines, if it addresses them at all.
livejournal is apparently owned and operated by men, with the few women staffers providing equally insufficient answers. complicating the issue? not all women are feminists, obviously, and not all feminists are women. we could potentially look to the male staffers for support of women's issues. however, given their previous stances on misogyny, and fandom, i'm guessing women are a poor bet in livejournal's opinion. just not worth supporting. [/desperately bitter sarcasm]

| Capitalism, America and Modern "Democracy" |
| Public |
|
Our culture has made us all slaves to an idea, an idea that takes precedence over everything, over our own lives and the lives of others. And slavery to an idea is far more dangerous than slavery to a human, because we do not even know that we are slaves. We pass through our days with the freedom of a dog who never reaches the end of its leash, certain that what we see is all of reality, all there ever was, all there ever will be, all that is possible. Having enslaved ourselves to this idea, we then enslave others, passing on the knowledge of how to be a slave from father to son, father to daughter, mother to son, mother to daughter, sibling to sibling, teacher to student, owner to laborer, boss to employee, slave to slave.
It's not easy to remove this leash we're not wearing, to break this leash that doesn't exist. How could I be a slave when I live in the land of the free? I choose my jobs, I choose where I live, I choose how I spend my time. I am not enslaved to industrial mass production. I am not enslaved to the perception of others as objects to be exploited. I am not enslaved to anything. I am a free man, and nothing you can say will convince me otherwise.
~~~~~~
"In many ways, modern slavery is exactly the same as slavery two or three hundred years ago. It's still slavery in the sense that people are controlled by violence, allowed no free will, not paid, and are economically exploited. That definition applies whether you're talking about ancient Greece, Mississippi in 1850, or Los Angeles in 2000."
"I'm not sure what the average price of a slave is in the world today," Kevin Bales, author of Disposable People continued, "but it can't be more than fifty or sixty dollars. That's a significant change compared to the $50,000 you'd have paid for a slave in 1850. ... In gold mining towns in the Amazon, a young girl might cost one hundred and fifty dollars. She's recruited to work in offices there, but then is beaten, raped, and put out to prostitution. She can be sold up to ten times a night, and can bring in ten thousand dollars per month. The only expenses are payments to the police and a pittance for food." ~~~~~~~
Okay, my posting filters will be as follows: the fanfic and fanvids filter, for all of your updating needs; my original novel filter, for those of you following my nanowrimo project; and my life and times, a more general filter covering everything else I post, most especially the usual everyday whining. ^_^ If you're on any of these filters, you should've just seen a post, and unless told otherwise I'm going to leave everything as is. If you didn't see a post from a particular filter and want in on the action, just let me know. And again, thanks for your patience while I spam some of you multiple times. ._. If all goes well, this will probably be my last public, un-flocked post. So this is also the time to request friending. Not that I won't friend you later, because I will ... um. Right. Carry on. ...
